Summer Reading, Fall Reading…

Eden Mills Writers’ FestivalWiggling slowly back into a regular work routine, as temperatures fall (especially over the Eden Mills Writers’ Festival weekend!) and as leaves begin showing their fall colours in my part of the country, I’m pausing here to recommend two very different books I gave 5-star reviews to this summer. A way of trying to hold onto the season? Perhaps?)

  • Juliet’s Nurse by Lois Leveen, which I happened across searching e-book fiction available at GPL.

I’m looking forward to getting fully immersed in my writing again and to my fall reading, too, including a couple of books that authors read from at the chilly festival in Eden Mills.

  • Adult Onset by Ann-Marie MacDonald, which I was pleased to see released in paperback.
  • His Whole Life by Elizabeth Hay, which after hearing her read, I decided I couldn’t wait for the paperback. What a treat it was to meet this author and to hear how one question from her 10 year old son (What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?) inspired her latest novel.

What’s the best book you read this summer?

What are you looking forward to reading to this fall?

I've read lots of good books this summer! I gave 5 stars to All the Light We Cannot See, The Infinite Plain, and We Need to Talk About Kevin, but there were a few that got 4 stars as well.

One of my goals is to read a current best seller before the end of the year, so I also have my eye on Adult Onset.

Right now I'm reading "Juliet, Naked" by Nick Hornby, and it's going to get at least 4 stars too!

You're in luck, Janet. I purchased Adult Onset at the EMWF. I quite liked Juliet Naked too. Not sure why I haven't marked it as Read on goodreads. I didn't think it was before I stated keeping track of my reading there but maybe it was. Happy reading, Janet!

I ate up Miranda July's book It Chooses You. I've also just started reading Oliver Sack's autobiography, after listening to an old CBC interview with him. So far I'm loving it, even though I've never liked the genre.

His Whole Life sounds intriguing. I'll put it on my must-read list.

    Thanks for your recommendations, Susan.

Loving a book in a genre you don't generally enjoy is a pretty strong sign it's a good one.

I checked out It Chooses You on goodreads and have added it to my Want to Read shelf. (On the Move was already there. :-))

    Happy reading, Susan!
