Book Groups & Summer Reading

Mother and daughter enjoying some summer reading at the cottageThe last Monday of the month for some years now I’ve been meeting with a group of women to discuss books. My idea for this post was to write about this group, as we’re soon to take a break and embark on the season of summer reading, perhaps mention a book or two we’ve read that generated good discussion (like last month’s Gone Girl), our fun December-meeting traditions, and occasional book-related events we’ve attended, like tonight’s Wines and Spines.

Many people I know (other friends, my daughter) are also members of book groups and my plan was to start this post with a statement about how many book groups there are in Canada. My search for that information (unfindable) did lead me to something far more interesting — a story about a book group I’m sure anyone who belongs to one will appreciate — or anyone who values books. Take a minute to read it! It’s pretty inspiring!

And whatever your summer plans, happy reading!

Wow, Kathy – that was an inspiring story! I almost didn't read it, thinking you were referring to this one.

I'm looking forward to lots of great reading this summer!

I'm glad you took the trouble of looking into it, Janet, and found it rewarding. That Briarcliff Book Club you've offered a link to might resemble our book groups more closely than the prison-based groups do, but it sounds more serious than my group and is certainly longer standing.

My group has been meeting for 25 years, but I'm pretty new on the scene, having joined in 2012. Of the six current members, four have been there since the start.

No one in my group is sure quite when we started, but I think it was only about 10 years ago. I don't expect any of us will be there if the group makes it to 50!
