May is Vision Health Month
Because I’m so grateful for my own vision health, and because I love to read aloud (and do it well), I’ve been working as a volunteer reader and technician at the CNIB Recording Studio for the past 6 years. In that time I’ve narrated parts of various magazines and text books and 19 entire books.
Among my favourites have been Falling by Anne Simpson, Consumption by Kevin Paterson, Some Day Angeline by Louis Sachar, and The Other End of the Leash by Patricia B. McConnell. I suppose I could also include on the list my own book, Becoming Ruby.
Since the CNIB has declared May the first annual Vision Health Month, I’m including here a few links from their newsletter, CNIB Audio Publishing News, to help spread awareness of the cause.
- The Great Canadian Yoga Stretch is a fitness fundraiser for people of all abilities.
- Shoppers at Costco, Metro and Walmart stores will have an opportunity to take a Vision Risk Assessment and find out more about CNIB services.
- Shades of Fun day is taking place at workplaces, schools and community centres on Thursday, May 27. Wear your shades to protect your eyes and show your support!
Please feel free to share these links with your friends and family. And whether you read print, audio books, or braille – happy reading!
