Writing by the Sea

By Kathy · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Picture yourself writing on the beautiful south shore of Nova Scotia in September. (The best month to be there, say the locals.) Imagine getting expert feedback there from one of Canada’s leading editors and one of Canada’s leading writers for young people that will help you take your current project to new heights of brilliance.

Sunset on the South Shore of Nova Scotia

The good news is: you may not have to just imagine. Peter Carver and I are offering our Seaside Writing Workshop/Retreat again this year – to six lucky writers dedicated to their craft. We welcome applications from novices and veterans alike.

Find out all you need to know about how to apply, where you’ll stay, the setting, and what former participants in the experience have to say about it. You can also read more and see more photos in other blog postings about the workshop/retreat.

Will you come and speak at our conference?

By Kathy · Comments (0)
Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

Kathy Stinson at Hycroft If your audience is teachers, librarians, booksellers, writers, parents, students, or seniors, chances are I’d love to come talk about just about any aspect of writing, reading, or being a writer in Canada. I’m more than open to suggestions.

In addition to the speaking fee, conference organizers should be prepared to cover the cost of travel, accommodation, if it’s needed, and conference registration. It’s sometimes possible to share these costs with schools who may be interested in booking visits while I’m “in town”.

Please contact me with questions or invitations!

teachers at professional development activity Yes, and it’s always a pleasure. (I was an elementary school teacher myself, before I was a writer.)

I can discuss how to motivate students to write, how to excite them about reading, or I can conduct a mini-writing workshop, as a model for how teachers might like to work with their students, at any level. I’m also more than open to suggestions.

Please contact me for more information or to suggest a date!

Do you offer writing workshops?

By Kathy · Comments (0)
Friday, April 8th, 2011

I offer a number of workshop options – for children, teens, and adults; single sessions or a series of sessions; and in a variety of settings including libraries, bookstores, schools, and private homes. I’ve even conducted workshops in Liberia. (If you want me to travel that far to do a workshop, somebody (besides me) has to cover the costs!)

I also offer, together with my partner Peter Carver (editor and writing teacher extraordinaire), a week-long seaside workshop on the south shore of Nova Scotia each year.

I’m happy to work with interested groups (including your writing group if you’re within easy range of Guelph) to determine an appropriate format and fee.

Please contact me for more information or to discuss your group’s or students’ needs.

Writing Communities

By Kathy · Comments (0)
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

At this month’s CANSCAIP meeting, a former participant at the Seaside Writing Workshop/Retreat that my partner and I offer in Nova Scotia each summer announced that we are now accepting applications for this years workshop/retreat. Since it involves living and working with five other participants (plus Peter and me), a lovely sense of community tends to develop in the five days and six nights that writers spend with us. (Of course, within the context of this community, there’s ample time for quiet writing, walks on the beach, and quiet reflection along the shore and in various outbuildings too.)

Seaside Writing Workshop/Retreat
It’s probably because writing is such a solitary activity that many writers seek out such opportunities to meet with fellow writers – to share stories of the joys and challenges of writing and to get the objective feedback that’s often necessary to take a writing project another step toward completion. This can be true whether it’s a first draft or a draft just prior to submission to a publisher that a writer is working on, or something in between.

The solitary nature of a writer’s work also lies behind why many writers like to belong to writers’ organizations. For those writing for young people (or just thinking about it, or who simply appreciate the results), there’s no better organization to belong to (in my opinion) than CANSCAIP – the Canadian Society of Children’s Authors, Illustrators and Performers. I’ve been a member since 1983!

One great thing about CANSCAIP is that memberships are available for professionals in the field, for those aspiring to be, and for those who simply want to support those involved in the industry and get the inside scoop on what’s going on there. Another is that as the organization has grown, groups of members have begun meeting in various provinces across the country.

Even if you don’t live somewhere within reach of meetings or conferences, you can still get access to meeting minutes, which include not only important announcements about residency programs, markets, new books — and the Seaside Writing Workshop/Retreat! — but excellent notes on programs featuring great speakers, too – authors, illustrators, performers, editors, publishers, etc.

Members also receive the quarterly Newsletter. Each issue includes an in-depth profile of a prominent Canadian author or illustrator, news about recent book releases, awards, writing programs and conferences, and publishing opportunities. The current Winter issue even included an excerpt from Marthe Jocelyn‘s Packaging Your Imagination keynote address, “Prophecies, Lies and Pearls of Wisdom”, as well as practical highlights from other PYI speakers’ presentations.

If you’re feeling the need to become part of a writing community, one way or another, check out CANSCAIP and the Seaside Writing Workshop/Retreat, and if you have questions about either, let me know.

Writers by the Sea

By Kathy · Comments (3)
Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

They came and wrote  – in the fish house, the old barn, the farmhouse, and on the beach. They wrote about kids who are lonely, who don’t fit in, kids curious, funny, or angry. They wrote all morning, and sometimes again in the afternoon or evening. When they weren’t writing, they were talking about writing, or walking the beach and rocky shore, frolicking in the waves, playing games, and sharing meals.

The six writers who attended the Seaside Writing Retreat & Workshop - August 2010

Then they went away, back to their homes in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario.

‘They’ are the six writers who attended the Seaside Writing Retreat & Workshop this August, run by me and my partner and Red Deer’s children’s book editor, Peter Carver. If what I’ve described sounds like your idea of a great time, or if you know someone who would think so, why not subscribe to my blog so you’re sure to find out right away when we are accepting applications for next year’s retreat/workshop?

Seaside Writing Retreat & Workshop

By Kathy · Comments (0)
Monday, April 5th, 2010

Sometimes, whether you’re a writer who appreciates a regular writing group or one who prefers going it alone, there are often points when working on a project, when you long for uninterrupted time to focus on it, or feel the need for fresh eyes to assess how it’s going.

The workshop/retreat that Peter Carver and I are offering in Nova Scotia in August will provide six writers with time and an inspiring setting in which to write, and meaningful feedback on their work.

Nova Scotia

You need to submit only five pages from a current work-in-progress when you apply, but the April 30 deadline for applications is fast approaching.

Whether you’re a writer with years of experience and publication under your belt or have only recently begun to explore your passion for writing, we welcome your application.

And in case you’re wondering, the beautiful woods and beach you see in the photos are only a few minutes walk from the house.

A Writing Group to Celebrate

By Kathy · Comments (2)
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Writing is a solitary occupation, and some writers like to keep it that way until it’s time to submit a manuscript to a publisher. Others, like me, prefer to meet regularly with a group of fellow writers – to get feedback on works-in-progress, to share in the trials and tribulations of the writing life, and to celebrate the joys of creation and of connecting with appreciative readers.

For ten years now I’ve had the good fortune to be a member of the most discerning and supportive group a writer could hope for. We met recently to celebrate! The others in my writing group are – in the order I came to know them – Paula Wing, Lena Coakley, and Hadley Dyer.

Hadley Dyer, Kathy Stinson, Lena Coakley and Paula Wing
They’re a talented bunch. Paula is a playwright, translator, and drama teacher. Lena is an author of picture books and short stories who has recently signed a contract for her first ya fantasy novel. Hadley is an editor and writer of many non-fiction titles whose first foray into fiction attracted awards like a magnet attracts iron filings.

These capsule statements don’t begin to capture their achievements or their dynamic and diverse personalities, so I hope you’ll check out the links above. (Sadly, Paula does not have her own website, which would no doubt capture her great wit, if she did.)

Wendy Lewis is another multi-talented writer who has also been a member of our group. After a few years, she decided to take a leave of absence and sadly has been unable to return.

Want to start up your own writing group? Here’s one site that suggests how, but a quick ‘writing group guidelines’ google search will turn up lots of others.

If you have a suggestion for writing group newbies, or for writing group veterans who might benefit from a fresh new idea – something your writing group experience has taught you – I hope you’ll post it as a comment.

In the meantime, happy writing!
